PLANETNOTION TELEVISION!
CAMERA-FOLK AND FILM EDITORS WANTED!
Planet Notion is looking for guys and dolls to film and edit features for its new TV channel, PNTV. Accompanying Notion to artist interviews, gigs, fashion shows, festivals and international events, you will be skilled, passionate and full of ideas about how to produce shit-hot video content. Camera-folk will be experienced and ideally have their own equipment, or at least access to equipment, while editors must be able to turn projects around quickly, and with stylistic flare. If you can both film and edit content, we would especially like to hear from you! These casual, unpaid positions would be ideal for those looking to develop their showreels, and to get the chance to travel, film major artists and top events.

Nothing quite like a tumbler of Jack Daniel’s ol’ Tennessee Whiskey to warm the cockles on a cold autumn day. Course it helps that you can carry it outside without it freezing into an alcoholic Slush Puppy. O the joys of Science… That said, if you started drinking from the bottle at a bus-stop or on a park bench or something, you’d probably get some funny looks, especially from the elderly. No; if you’re cold and you like your JD, Planet Notion recommends going to one of five venues the JD Set will be hitting in November. The now legendary JD Set’s invite bands and stuff – some young and some renowned, to perform with legendary musicians, making for a unique musical experience. For the bands it’s an exciting opportunity to perform with a musician they probably admired, and who probably inspired. For those in attendance it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to see a top-notch collaboration. Previously, Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook has taken to the JD Sets, playing with everyone from The Wombats to The Subways. The legendary bassist described it as: “A memory that will live with me forever” and commented that “It gave me my spirit back!” In a nut-shell, Hooky thought it was the dog’s dangly bits. Course this time round the scales of greatness are no different. Invited along for each of the five JD Sets is Stranglers singer and guitarist, Hugh Cornwell, one of the all time legends of the post-punk scene. Cornwell will be collaborating with the likes of the Paddingtons and the Shortwave Set over the five-day period. If you’ve never heard the Shortwave Set, they sound like prancing around a field; naked, high on acid and “At one with the world, man”… only with basslines and shizzle in the background. All in all, pretty fucking good. Other highlights over the five nights include The Hours, a seven-piece band from Sheffield who have previously supported Oasis. They’ll be supported by Fox Clubs on the night and… balls to it! Rather than going through every single act and every single night like a hamster in a wheel, we’ll list all of them alongside their prospective dates: 6th Nov: The Hours, Fox Cubs: The Luminaire, London 7th Nov: Shortwave Set, Joy Formidable, The Hosts: Night and Day, Manchester 8th Nov: Paddington’s, Les Gars: Spring & Airbrake, Belfast 11th Nov: Art Brut, Rosie & the Goldbug: ABC2, Glasgow 13th Nov: Sam Isaac, Fight Like Apes: The Cluny, Newcastle There, that was simple. For further information on the JD Sets, including its history, the inspiration behind it and ticket details, CLICK HERE .

When Shakespeare said “To be or not to be” was he talking about a pencil? I’ve got this theory that he wasn’t talking about a pencil at all. I’ve got a theory that he really liked Be@Proud, but one Saturday he’d made a promise to write some prose or take a lady-friend to the cinema or something. The problem of what to do was really dwelling on his mind, our Shakespeare, and he was thinking “Shall I go, shall I go to the cinema? Where the devil will I go? To Be or not to Be, that is the question”. Of course, I know I’m a slightly strange chap, but I don’t actually believe that Shakespeare could go to the cinema or Be@Proud or anything like that because, well, he died in 1616. It was just a sad means of introducing the next fantastic night of music and shenanigans at Be@Proud. And anyway, even the dimmest person knows that Shakespeare was talking about a pencil… First-up on the night we’ve got Panico. The name sounds like building brick toy manufacturer, but they sound like a Klaxons/Primal Scream hybrid if they were Chilean and buzzing on some proper powerful Doves or something. It’s fuzzy garage-rock electro; it’s “let’s shake our bandy legs like we’re having an orgasmic fit of euphoria”; its Chico if he wasn’t a gormless nomad and wrote more than one decent song (I liked Chico Time); it’s all these things and more, more, MORE!!!!!! Next-up, The Coast. If you like skew-whiff Indie-pop that can carry you on a journey from fairly happy dancing guy, to chatting up a buxom blonde guy, to sitting on the floor and holding back the tears in the corner all by himself guy, then you’ll probably like this four-piece from Toronto. They’re highly anticipated debut album, Expatriate, was released back in April and big things are expected of The Coast in 2009. And so we near the end of this here preview. But don’t cry, baby, we’re not quite finished yet. If you’re a hot-blooded male, remember to take your bumper jar of Gaviscon to Be@Proud. Finnish trio Le Corps Mince de Francoise are sure to send heart-rates pummelling through the roof. I spat in my hand and began to unbutton my ropey jeans when I saw a picture, but someone in the office caught me. But boy, oh boy is that image stored in the reference bank. Le Corps Mince de Francoise will bring out the inner dancer in everyone. They’ve got it all; funky electro-pop; stunning good looks; and lyrics about Ray-Bans. WHOO! Finally, Be residents David H, John Power and Clemence Lachance will be on hand for some late night and early hours DJ madness, whilst VJ Hagpop Matossian will return with some “proper crazy visuals, man!” Be@Proud Saturday 18th October Proud Galleries, Horse Hospital Stables Market, Camden NW1 8AH 8pm – 2.30am Tickets: £5 (before 9) £8 (adv) £10 www.be-at.co.uk

A new pub is opening. Hoorah! Just when Planet Notion was thinking that dodgy licensing laws and the smoking ban and the credit crunch were forcing the Great British boozer to go the way of the wind, we’re presented with The Black Sheep, a Gastro Pub in Brick Lane, London. Sadly it’s only temporary, so don’t go spunking your pants just yet. The Black Sheep will reside at The Truman Brewery to mark the release of mobile phone maker, Palm Europe LTD’s brand new Treo Pro Smartphone. More on the phone later, first, what you can expect from The Black Sheep from October 13th – 17th, whilst it’s open. The gastro pub will welcome an ‘audience with’ night for each day its open, with food being served up by Michelin starred and head-chef of The Ledbury in Notting Hill, Brett Graham. The guest stars for each day will represent those that go against the grain; those that like to do things in their own unique way… even if some of the people (Piers Morgan) are the kind of people you love to hate and love all the more for the hate of it. Alas, we’re a music site (predominantly), so we’ll let you know the exciting news first. Synth-pop pioneers and all-round darlings of the 80s, Human League will be performing a one-off show on Tuesday 14th. The band tasted success with 1981 album Dare!, which reached the number 1 spot alongside the hit single Don’t You Want Me Baby. The track is still as popular now as it was then, receiving regular airplay and consistently played in suburban clubs the country over. Alas, here’s a run-down of the other guys and gals taking to The Black Sheep: Monday – Piers Morgan (former editor of News of the World and Daily Mirror) Tuesday – Human League (As above) Wednesday – Karren Brady (CEO of Birmingham City FC and newspaper columnist) Thursday – Primetime comedian (Details are sketchy…) Friday – Beijing GB Gold Medalist (Ditto) The Black Sheep October 13th – 17th Old Truman Brewery 91 Brick Lane London , E1 6QL Users of the Treo™ Pro smartphone can quickly respond to business and personal email, access the web, stay on top of appointments and contacts, and use Wi-Fi or GPS on the go. Treo™ Pro’s thin design blends a flush, high-resolution colour touch screen and a full QWERTY keyboard with a removable battery that packs up to five hours of talk time. Been having one of those weeks where I get all philosophical and wonder just how vast the Universe is and question what I’m doing with my life and shit. Thing is, it isn’t even a come-down. I mean, I was only drinking heavily this weekend, nothing major. 50 hours was all. Still, I think I’m over the booze demons. I think the last of their haunting was when the Fox started mauling my shoulder and mum rushed in, shook me and told me it was: “Just a dream, son; just a dream”. I think this dark, gloomy depression must be God’s way of saying: “YOU SHOULD HAVE GONE TO BE@PROUD, YOU FOOL” or “YOU SHOULD GO TO BE@PROUD THIS WEEKEND, YOU NUMPTY!” Well, something like that. Hell, one look at the line-up and I make the big man right. Yet again Be@Proud has pulled out all the stops. First-up we’ve got one of the finest remix DJs to emerge from the ol’ – “ eels, pies, saveloys and trotters” – East End of London. I refer of course to Radio1’s newest DJ, Kissy Sell Out. The anticipation for Kissy’s debut album has been huge since he started on the London circuit - before taking the whole ruddy nation by storm! The Graphic Design graduate’s talents have earned him accolades from some of the industries finest. Little surprise; Kissy’s sound is fresher than a spring daisy and sicker than Pat Butcher doing a curry-dump in a shallow puddle. Supporting Kissy Sell Out will be near neighbours the Rogues, who are the equivalent of a very heavy day and night and week on the tiles, skipping from venue to venue and pub to pub and not quite knowing if you’ll be faced with some funky electro beats or some good ol’ fashioned pub-pop fodder. Hailing from Harrow, Rogues have only played a few gigs together, already garnering a reputation and a string of live dates under their belts. Fresh on the American scene, James Pants has been turning heads with his friggin-far-out-sound, man. Pants’ tunes are far from his namesake, his beats dripping with everything from new wave and R&B to post-punk disco. Hip-hop’s newest big-name, Dels, will also be making the trip to Camden. The 23-year-old has already been signed to hip London label, Moshi Moshi and is set to release an album with Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard early next year. O and lest we forget, Be resident DJ, David H and resident VJ ,(the fabulously named) Hagpop Matossian, will be on hand for another dose of bad-arse beats and mind-fucking visual displays. PHEW! Got there eventually. And if that bloody fox creeps up on my dreams again and starts munching my shoulder or my cock or something, I’m going to kick him right out the window – smashed glass or no smashed glass , because there’s no way I’m missing this one… Be@Proud Saturday 11th October Proud Galleries, Horse Hospital Stables Market, Camden NW1 8AH 8pm – 2.30am Tickets: £5 (before 9) £8 (adv) £10 www.be-at.co.uk

Yes, yes, yes. Thrice yes. Levi’s OnesToWatch October schedule has been released and 'O' what a line-up we’ve got in store. Following the success of the Levi’s OnesToWatch ‘5 Night Revue’ at the Macbeth, which saw the likes of Metronomy and Foals grace its presence, the 'O' so popular music series will be hitting The Old Blue Last in London. Armed with his battered acoustic, Derek Meins will be wowing the masses with his whimsical blend of music and poetry. It’s kind of like being in Greenwich Village in the early 60s and stuff; little surprise that James Joyce was a major influence. The folk and blues man has been lauded as a fantastic live performer, and his solo poetry performances are said to be a particular treat. Well worth the admission alone… Carrying on the acoustic theme will be Josh Weller, formerly of Josh Weller and The Availables (don’t worry, I’ve never heard of ‘em either). Alas, Josh has received plaudits from across the border as a solo proposition, his music a nod to days of yore, all with the eccentric youngster’s own stamp of musical authority. Finally, London five-piece La Shark will be heading to The Old Blue Last. The London five-piece blend quirky beats and music with even quirkier vocal harmonies. Levi’s OnesToWatch 8th October, 2008 Action starts at 7.30 Old Blue Last 38 Great Eastern St Shoreditch , EC2A 3ES Tickets: £6.50 (adv) Ticketline: 0870 907 0999

We’re living in a café culture; a culture of sausage eggs and bacon (thrice) and doner kebabs (thrice times three). Usually followed by a tub of Haagen Dasz, a family sized coke and four tubes of Cheese and Onion Pringles. Oh, what woe! Trouble is, that getting fit is so ruddy boring. It’s like a Sunday afternoon, when you’re two weak to write, there’s nothing but rubbish on TV, you’ve got a tedious family meal to attend, you’ve been banned from drinking because you were on the lash the day before and… and… and… Enter Sony Ericsson’s Run To The Beat, which aims to make exercise interesting by adding 30 bands and artists into the equation. It’s for charity as well, so, you know, it’s basically the best idea since I considered handing in my notice. Run To The Beat is a half marathon, taking place in London this Sunday (October 5th). When the runners reach one of 16 points, they’ll hear some tippety-top, with some extra topping of top, live music playing. It’s kind of like a festival, only across half of London and without everyone getting tanked-up and bedding strangers. The event has been organized with Sony Ericsson’s partner, City Showcase, whose previous events in the capital include the London Music Festival, where the likes of Amy Winehouse, Hot Chip and Keane played. As well as acts that people instantly recognize, upcoming bands from around the nation are also going to perform. This includes the genre-bending upstarts, Imperial Leisure, who consist of 2 MCs, 1 singer, a Rhythm section and a Brass section. The band - who merge ska, rap and rock, have gained plaudits from the likes of XFM and Radio1. In a scientific twist, the tempo of the music is to be governed by Brunel University Academic, Dr Costas Karageorghis, who has over 20 years experience researching the link between sport and music. “We have been examining the demographic profile of athletes very carefully,” explains Dr Karageorghis, “to ensure the selection of live music acts span age groups and genders to provide motivational music that will inspire runners as well as spectators.” The unfortunate thing is that Run To The Beat has already sold-out. Boo and Hiss! But don’t go lynching us for failing to bring news to you sooner; for you can still get involved and raise money for charity, including official charity partner Leukaemia Research. For further information, including how to get involved and a map of the Run To The Beat circuit, visit runtothebeat.co.uk Oh and taking to the main stage of Run To The Beat, at around 1300 hours, will be Trash Fashion, who have been causing quite a stir in the underground press of late (apparently). The band won a competition in Super Super magazine to play at the event. The Smirnoff Electric Cabaret is hitting Manchester on November 27th. Sorry. Did I lack enthusiasm? Okay, I’ll try again. SMIRNOFF ELECTRIC CABARET IS HITTING MANCHESTER ON NOVEMBER 27TH!!! There, now I’ve got your attention. The Original Nights event returns with a host of cutting-edge tunes, from some of the most cutting-edge artists, alongside some of the most cutting-edge cabaret acts. In other words, its proper cutting-edge. Here’s a run-down of who’s going to be performing. Sam Sparro: He may look a bit like a lady-boy, but you can’t help but wiggle your buttocks like a cat when you hear his tunes. You know? When they’re trying to be all sexy and start rubbing against your legs and stuff like proper little tarts. Sparro’s debut album, Black & Gold, was dubbed the ‘disco anthem of the year’ and it’s easy to tell why. Pat Mahoney: He’s the guy nominated for two Grammy’s as part of electronic, dance-punk shebang, LCD Soundsystem. At the Smirnoff Electric Cabaret, Pat will be teaming-up with DFA Records label-mate Juan Maclean, for a super massive, bangin’ great, Acid House revival set - paying homage to the Roland synthesizers that revolutionized the power of the dance. Now try saying that with a whole Ikea hot dog in your mouth. Hard isn't it? Das Pop: The three-part Belgian, one-part Kiwi electro pop outfit, will be making just about everyone (which could/should include you) jump up, take notice and dance like a bandy-legged giraffe on forty cans of Red Bull and three dozen Es. Providing an equally formidable dance sensation will be Devil’s Gun , whose incorporation of everything from breakbeat and electro, to house and clunky synths, have gained them plaudits the nation over. As per-usual there’ll be a whole host of cabaret acts performing, although details are currently sketchy and acts are TBC. We know that previous cabaret acts included ‘man-becomes-6ft-balloon’. The clues in the name; the appropriately named Bruce Airhead literally becomes a 6ft balloon. Anyway, Smirnoff will carry on the tradition of a free drink on entry and invite revelers to choose a drink by scent, using a special ‘snifter’. Which is basically a hand-blown glass nosing tube. Oh and you’ll be invited to delve into a fancy dress box and transform yourself for the night into whatever is available. A horse? A prince? A massive donger? Who knows? We do know that the Smirnoff Electric Cabaret will definitely be a good’n. It always is. Smirnoff Electric Cabaret 27th November 2008 Manchester Academy , Oxford Road , Manchester , M13 9PR 8.30pm – 2am Cabaret Acts: TBC Tickets: TBC Visit the Smirnoff Original Nights Facebook page for further updates and details.

SHOCK HORROR! I’ve managed to get this weeks Be@Proud preview online way before it happens. Maybe it’s because I’m going on a break tomorrow and had to get it done. Maybe it’s because I’m genuinely excited about the night and had to tell the world. And maybe it’s because I’m so bloody brilliant at running this website. Ahem, so the world doesn’t read Planet Notion and I’m absolutely shit at running a website, but one-and-a-half out of three ain’t bad… So, once again, here’s a run-down of what you can expect to see at Proud Galleries on September 27th. First-up: Screaming Tea Party. No, not a scene from Alice in Wonderland, had Lewis Carroll’s opium indulgence been topped-up by several tabs of 60s finest, but a female drummer from London and, um... two lads from Tokyo. The Mad Hatter thing isn’t a bad analogy as it goes, because Screaming Tea Party sound like putting a bag of pills in a washing machine, sticking your head deep into the epicenter and playing hungry-hippos whilst it’s on spin-dry. We’re talking sweet psych-punk rhythms and lo-fi tunes that range from mouth-wateringly subtle to full-throttle satisfying. Delicious! Next-up: Munch Munch… The Bristol quartet are like that really deformed guy from the Goonies who had a strange infatuation with young fat boys. They’re so brutally ugly to listen to, you’d rather they were locked in a padded cell and fed through a letter-box. But you can’t help but love them anyway. Munch Munch produce their DIY sound in a bedroom, have been granted numerous Radio 1 sessions and have a new single out on November 26th. They’re also lauded as one of the most exciting live acts around. Two words: Excruciatingly brilliant! Finally: The Lovely Jonjo will be making the journey to Camden’s finest. We know very little about this chap, except that he likes: “A good time, a good loud noise, a good beat you can dance to, a good booze, a good beach, a good man, a good lady friend, a good booze, a good meal, a good family, Why put up with medium?” We need say no more. This is the last Be@Proud of September, but have no fear; I’ll be back next month with a preview of Be@Proud’s October schedule. So, stay tuned, or I’ll cut your nuts and nipples off with a Gordon Ramsey fish slicer!!! Only kidding. Be@Proud September 27th Proud Galleries, Horse Hospital, Stables Market, Camden, NW18AH, 8pm – 2.30am Tickets: £5 (before9) £8 (adv) £10 (otd) www.be-at.co.uk

This one’s literally just around the corner. As in next Thursday and Friday. As in we’re based in Shoreditch and so is Concrete and Glass. So, yep, it’s literally just around the corner. Anyway, it’s called Concrete and Glass and it’s set to be bloody massive! So massive that we’re going to keep this very short and very sweet and let the line-up do the talking. Which is totally unprecedented. But, as a one man team, Planet Notion has a shed load of crap to get through today, especially if I’m going to get my long overdue break at the end of the week. Anyway, I'll tickle your taste-buds with a few additions to Concrete and Glass, including the sexiest Swede since Sven-Goran Eriksson burst onto the radar, Lykke Li. Her electro-tinged, sweet-dripping pop is equally delicious. YUM! If David Bowie was American or something, he’d probably be the figure-head of Secret Machines. But he isn’t American and he isn’t their figure-head and they’re still great and much heavier and stuff, so happy days! Brighton’s finest, Fujiya and Miyagi, Dublin’s sublimest (sic), Fight Like Apes, and London's excellentist (double sic), Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man, will also be on hand to deliver their own bite of brilliance. Concrete and Glass will take place across 18 venues around Shoreditch, including 93 Feet East, Cargo, Catch, Hoxton Bar and Grill, Electricity Showrooms and Rough Trade East.
