NOTION 058: SUMMER IS HERE
This issue we’ve gone for two different covers that embody the many sides of our two loves: music & fashion. We were struck by the arrival of Aiden Grimshaw, and we feel he deserves a chance to stand up for himself as a new kind of reality graduate. On the other side, Rizzle Kicks headline our Festival Guide front cover as the very image of raucous goodtimes that summer offers. Packed with a smorgasbord of singers, designers, artists, musicians and brilliant, brilliant things, this issue is one of our biggest – and best – yet.
AIDEN GRIMSHAW / WITHOUT PREJUDICE
After The Quiff: with the makings of a very modern rebel of the cause, the X Factor alumnus could have it all – if he can persuade us to listen without prejudice.
RIZZLE KICKS / KICKSTART YOUR SUMMER
The bold, bouncy, brilliant pair of lads have taken the charts by storm: they’re irrepressible, adorable and no one can fail to like them. They’re celebrating the forthcoming festival season, perfectly encapsulating the stylish good times ahead.
SAM SPARRO / THE MEANING OF POP
An incredible, classic photo-story in the home of an LA vintage clothier with a man who makes incredible, classic pop music
ARCHEO / IT’S SOMETHING ELSE
Another stylish pop classicist, London’s Archeo, gives us his grooming musts at the scene of legendary London barbers It’s Something Hell’s.
BECOMING REAL / BEAUTIFULLY DISTURBED
A photo-story set in Toby Ridler’s live-work space in the famous Cable Street Studios; and a conversation concerning his revelatory, beautiful electronica.
NOTION FESTIVAL GUIDE 2012
Our legendary festival guide returns for another year, this time as a whopping 48 page insert into the magazine proper. We’ve grouped the festivals to ensure your tastes are catered for, as well as sourcing the best festival fashion and bands to watch out for.
13 Bands for Festivals 2012; as recommended by Rob Da Bank
Party Hard: Festivals where the goodtimes roll
Stroke the Beard: It's ALL about the music, man
Best of British: The best of the UK's festival scene
EuroLol: Foreign climes and guaranteed good weather
Culture Vulture: It's not just about the music, man
Good Clean Fun: Avoid the mud at these urban one-dayers
For men we look at new tailoring and new styling, in a sharply-cut shoot entitled Mr Mister. For the gals we take a shot at Summer Grunge – perfect pastels for urban parks or festival funtimez.
We also chat to Dirty Projectors on their latest record, Squarepusher on the future of electronica and the latest indie troubadour sensation, Jake Bugg. We talk to the London designer Lou Dalton and report from Coachella, as well as the usual generous helping of Albums, Film and Clubs.
